There is a class structure in the United States and no one likes to talk about it. In the United States there is a segment of the population that has always been poor. America is proud to announce the middle class. It draws a pretty picture of the working class. Where does the middle class really start and where does it end?
What is the middle class for white America as compared to the middle class for African Americans? is there really a difference between groups of people in the United States that would put them into clearly defined social classes? The answers to this is yes. African Americans came to this country in chains and by force. For hundreds of years they were treated as property by the ruling class. They were not treated as citizens and did not have any rights. The white ruling class enjoyed all the benefits that society allowed it's citizens at that time.
African Americans were not allowed to be educated, or own property for hundreds of years. They lived under inhumane conditions and treated like livestock. Families were broken apart and sold. Women and children were raped and treated as sexual concubines and sexual slaves. African American men were not allowed to sit as heads of their families. They did not enjoy the rights of/as men in a free society for hundreds of years.
When slavery was abolished the African American was so far behind the ruling class as far as obtaining and receiving the benefits given to the ruling class (white people) in the American society. They were discriminated against to this very day. They were not allowed to vote in most States until the 1960's due to clause's in the laws established in the 1800's. Without proper education and other social benefits extended to them as a people for such a long time, disparity and inequality increased and became interwoven within their society. They were forced to live under segregation, discrimination, and substandard conditions until recently in our history.
The indigenous people were killed, subjugated and forced to live on small pieces of land called reservations. They were never truly accepted into or by the American society. They suffer from some of the same social ills inflicted and caused by the white ruling class in America. The list can go on. This truly is why I say that yes, America is a society full of class groups. Where will they go? How will they grow? They are not invisible!
